Western Blvd, Leicester LE2 7HN
We love the wonderful British tradition of Summer Festivals and the Leicester Riverside Festival is one of the ones that we’re taking the LoveTaliesin Jewellery gazebo in 2017.
This year celebrates the 20th year of Leicester Riverside Festival, a lively weekend of activities for the whole family spread across Bede Park, Mile Straight, Western Boulevard and Castle Gardens. Sponsored by local housing provider Riverside, this popular festival offers boat trips, live music, a variety of food stalls from around the world, craft and jewellery, displays and an exciting choice of activities for all ages, making it a fun packed weekend!
The event is the city’s biggest free festival, combining live entertainment, activities for all ages and a dazzling array of arts and crafts and community stalls, demonstrations and attractions.
The focus for the weekend is on the River Soar, along Western Boulevard, and this year’s events see the return of charity Dragon Boat racing on the river next to Castle Gardens on the Saturday.
There will also be boat trips available as well as demonstrations on the water by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue, Paddle Plus and The Sea Cadets.
As part of the musical programme, the very best of local bands and musicians will perform on the main stage, including the winners of the city’s annual Original Bands Showcase event. The winners of the grand final held at The Musician Pub in May were Leicester band Dig Lazarus and runners up Not My Good Arm.
Both band will be playing on Saturday, June 6, at the festival, along with headliners The Brandy Thieves and The Strangler Figs. There will also be a beer tent with an acoustic stage on both days featuring local performers.
On Sunday the main stage will host the annual Sing For Water Choir performance along with a performance by Drum and Brass, which is a unique collaboration between Leicester-based Asian musicians and Leicester brass band players.
The festival finale on Sunday will be pop and soul band Sugabeat.
The festival’s main sponsor, Riverside Housing, will be celebrating 10 years of partnership with the Riverside Festival and will be hosting a café area on Bede Park along with children’s activities. There will also be special celebrations at their offices on Western Boulevard.
Local environmental groups will feature in the Greenlight festival area, while Ride Leicester will provide a series of bike-based workshops and demonstrations, plus free bike parking.
Riverside Festival takes place on Saturday, June 6, from 12noon to 7pm, and on Sunday, June 7, from 12noon to 5pm.
