The origin of the Unicorn

It could break a million little girls’ hearts if I insist that the Unicorn is an ancient myth, but the Roman writer and naturalist Pliny  wrote his book “Natural History” about 1600 years ago. He packs his book with a lot of facts, but even then, Fake News was creeping into the realms of fact. Pliny’s description was not even very flattering:

“The unicorn is the fiercest animal, and it is said that it is impossible to capture one alive. It has the body of a horse, the head of a stag, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a boar, and a single black horn three feet long in the middle of its forehead. Its cry is a deep bellow.”

But Pliny wasn’t alone, the Unicorn appears in the Old Testament of the Bible.

“God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.”

Historical sources continue in this vein for many centuries until it becomes a child’s icon  as more magical, gentle creature, running around on rainbows and inspiring millions with regular appearances in My Little Pony (and in the occasional acid trip).
