Pentagram Goldtone Charm Earrings – hand-made with goldtone charms

The Pentagram Goldtone Charm Earrings include a very misunderstood symbol. A pentagram is a five-pointed star, with all lines the same length and all angles the same.  So ‘pentangle’, pentacle, ‘star pentagon’, or ‘pentalpha’ all mean the same thing. The word pentagram originally meant ‘any symbol that protects against evil spirits’.

Goldtone is something that resembles the colour of gold.

Ancient Meanings of the Pentagram

The Pentagram was used in ancient times as a Christian symbol for the five senses, or of the five wounds of Christ. This was long before its association with witches or the occult. The pentagram plays an important symbolic role in the 14th-century English poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, in which the symbol decorates the shield of the hero, Gawain.

A Satanic Symbol?

Certainly some writers in the 19th and 20th centuries have used the Pentagram to represent satanism in this way. Its appearance  in horror films has helped to make this interpretation of the pentagram more common as well. It is sometimes said that a pentagram with point downwards is a sign of evil.

Modern Meanings of the Pentagram

However the pentagram has some real positives among its modern meanings:

  • The Elements: Each point represents one of the major elements in nature and witchcraft. These are Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Aether or Spirit. Some say the circle represents the power of the witch to contain and control the elements.
  • Circle of Manifestation: The pentagram can be a  manifestation tool. It allows the star to act as a portal for spirits.  At the same time, the circle contains the spirit protecting the summoner. It also allows the spirit to remain within our plane longer. On a smaller scale, you can use a pentagram to manifest things you want in your life. It also charges crystals or other ritual tools with your intent.
  • Divine Feminine: Some see the pentagram as the ultimate expression of womanhood with the open centre of the star representing the womb.
  • Man (or Woman!): Each point stands for head, 2 arm and 2 legs with the heart corresponding to the centre of the pentacle. The circle represents mankind’s place in the centre of the universe.
  • New Age Spirituality: In the 70s and 80s, the pentagram was generally used to stand for any spiritual or Pagan path.
  • Satanism (usually with the point facing down): Seen as a symbol for the Horned God, some Satanic groups adopted the pentacle reversed to represent themselves.
  • Witchcraft (The Craft): While Witchcraft has no one symbol that represents it, the media often assumes it does and uses the pentagram in a derogatory way.
  • Celestial Power: Some see the pentagram as a star overlaying the full moon making it represent the heavens and celestial energy.
