Turquoise is found in only a few places on earth. These are the dry and barren semi-deserts where acid rain water with copper dissolved in it seeps downward. This in turn reacts with minerals containing phosphorus and aluminium. Over millennia, this results in a compound of hydrated copper and aluminium phosphate.

This unromantic description hides the vivid beauty of the colour of Turquoise. It undoubtedly lacks the “bling” of transparent coloured gemstones like ruby, emerald, and sapphire, but its soul-satisfying blue colour makes it a desirable gem. However, it can range in colour from from dull greens to grass greens to a bright, medium-toned, sky blue.

People value turquoise jewellery very highly for its combination of ancient heritage and  for its unforgettable colour.

The robin’s-egg blue or sky blue turquoise is found in the Nishapur district of Iran. This country used to be called Persia. So this beautiful colour is also known as “Persian blue”.

Jewellery designers have been inspired designers to use Turquoise to create beautiful and  elegant jewellery. You will find all kinds of Turquoise jewellery, sometimes using cabochons, but also beads or flat pieces for inlays.

Turquoise is one of the world’s most ancient gems. The Pharaohs and rulers of ancient Egypt wore turquoise jewellery. Chinese craftsmen were carving it more than 3,000 years ago and Turquoise is the national gemstone of Tibet. The name itself derives from the French “pierre tourques”, or “Turkish stone.” This reflects the fact that Turquoise almost certainly arrived in Europe from Turkey.rkish sources.

Turquoise was also both a gemstone and a form of currency used by some Native American tribes. The Apaches believed that turquoise attached to a bow or firearm increased a hunter’s or warrior’s accuracy.
