Mermaid Charm Earrings – hand-made with Tibetan silver charms

The Mermaid Charm Earrings evoke the mythical half-woman half-fish that dates back to the first written accounts of humanity.

A mermaid is a sea-dwelling creature, with the head and body of a woman and a fish’s tail below the waist. The English word mermaid is a compound of “mere” (Old English for sea) and “maid” (a girl or young woman).
Stories of mermaids have existed for thousands of years and appear all over the world – even in the Karoo desert in South Africa which has no coastline.  The way that the mermaid is viewed varies across the planet too.  In some cultures, she signifies life in the ocean. In others, she stands for the negative power of the sea, luring sailors to their deaths and as a warning of storms, dangerous seas and disaster.

Mermaids in Real Life and Modern Fiction

Sorry, the facts show that mermaids are totally fictional, but that hasn’t stopped plenty of people reporting sightings.

Even Christopher Columbus had a mermaid sighting of his own in in 1492. However, his mermaid adventure turned out to be the first written record of manatees in North America.

There was a fake documentary special on mermaids shown the Animal Planet TV channel back in 2013. Straight afterwards the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was flooded with calls from people asking for the truth about mermaids.

In Ancient Greece, Homer’s Odyssey, the heroic tale of a Greek warrior had mermaids who were described as sirens. They were the darker kind of mermaid, though who who lured sailors to their deaths. So we often see that the word “siren” means mermaid in many languages.  Homer’s  sirens were rather like the ones in J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, but Hans Christian Andersen’s story of The Little Mermaid, also featured in Disney’s 1989 film, was a love story.
