Parrot Charm Earrings – hand-made with Tibetan silver charms

The Parrot Charm Earrings depict this often talkative bird.  The real birds are colourful and are found in warm and  tropical locations all over the world.  All parrots have curved beaks. Most parrots eat fruit, flowers, buds, nuts, seeds, and some small creatures such as insects.

But not all parrots are tropical dwellers. Of the roughly 350 known species of parrots, most live in the tropical and subtropical regions of Australia, Asia, Central and South America and Africa. But keas live in alpine regions of New Zealand and nest in ground burrows, while the endangered maroon-fronted parrot lives at 6,000 feet in the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains of Mexico.

An African Grey Parrot named Alex was studied by researchers who concluded that he had the intelligence of a 5 year old child.

Puck, a cheery blue parakeet, was a record-breaking talker with a set of 1,728 words.

An Amazon parrot called Groucho, who appeared on TV in 2010 singing “How Much is that Doggie in the Window”.

Parrots are often very long-lived. Tarbu, an African grey in England, lived to the age of 55. The  oldest parrot in the world was Cookie, a Major Mitchell’s cockatoo at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. He died at the age of 82 years old back in 2016.

There are wild parrots here in Britain.  Some birds have adopted parks and gardens in the London suburbs as a preferred habitat.  Up to 3000 parrots are living in a single sports ground in Surrey, according to some reports.  Other parrots have been spotted in inner-London, including parks in Peckham, Brixton, Greenwich and Kensington. A few parrots have also made their homes in East Anglia, the North West and in Scotland.
