Moon and Stars Charm Earrings – hand-made with Tibetan silver charms

The Moon and Stars Charm Earrings have a number of meanings, although a crescent moon with four stars is somewhat unusual.

Different cultures and faiths have recognised meaning in a moon and star or stars.

An Islamic Symbol

The symbol is possibly best known in Islam.  Normally shown as a moon with just one star, this world religion has strong links to the moon cycle and an important part of Muslim faith is the fasting month of Ramadan. The cycles of the moon determine the exact dates of Ramadan. The moon and single star appears on the flags of many countries to show their faith in Islam.

An Ancient Image

The crescent moon and stars first appear in carvings by the Sumerian culture. this was probably the oldest civilisation to have lived on earth. The Sumerians considered that the moon and stars represented the Gods and the symbol would have been considered an important element of their worship.

Specific Godesses

The moon and multiple stars is also a symbol of a specific God or Goddess. The Greek Goddess Artemis and the Roman Goddess Diana are often associated with a moon and stars. It is also associated with other Godesses such as Nyx, a Greek Goddess of the night.  Tanit was the Great Goddess of the Carthaginians and Astarte or Ishtar was the Mesopotamean Goddess of War. They both  also have this symbol.

The Ottoman Empire

A forerunner of Islam was the religion of the Ottoman Empire known as Tengrism. This was known the “Sky God religion”.  This religion placed a lot of emphasis on using symbols of the skies to enhance worship. The Ottoman flag s included the moon and stars. Over time, this flag became became the crescent moon and single star depicted on the flag of Turkey as we know it today.

Modern Times

In modern times, some Pagans use the symbol. The moon has Pagan connotations, the points on the stars represent the five elements and the three stars represent the transition of the Goddess from Maiden through Mother to Crone.

The image of the moon and stars also evokes the idea of perfect balance. Life on earth is a balance of night and day, dark and light, heat and cold. The moon and our own bright star, the sun symbolise this balance. The Moon Goddess and the Sun God in modern Pagan religions such as Wicca are also encapsulated in this image.
