Rooster Charm Earrings – hand-made with Tibetan silver charms

The Rooster Charm Earrings have been hand-made by Sue to celebrate this bird.

A rooster, also known as a cockerel or cock, is a male domestic chicken. In fact the word “rooster” originated in the United States to avoid the sexual connotation of the word “cock”.

Rooster crowing contests are a traditional sport in several countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United States, Indonesia and Japan.  Depending on the breed, either the duration of the crowing or the times the rooster crows within a certain time is measured.

It appears in many guises on emblems, coats of arms and logos.

  • The Gallic rooster is an emblem of France.
  • The Cockburn clan in Scotland use the cock as their badge.
  • A fighting cockerel on a ball is the symbol of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The cockerel wears a pair of spurs which is a reference to the club’s nickname. It has been present on their crest and shield since 1901.
  •  Jesus College in the University of Cambridge features roosters on its coat of arms, which is a pun on the name of the college’s founder, John Alcock.
  • The Coat of arms of Kenya features a rooster holding an axe.

The Year of the Rooster is the 10th of the 12 Chinese named years.  Recent years of the Rooster include 2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957, and 1945.

If you were born in a year of the Rooster, according to Chinese tradition, you are very observant, hard-working, resourceful, courageous, talented, very confident. You are also always active, amusing, and popular within a crowd. But that’s not all, would you describe yourself as talkative, outspoken, frank, open, honest, and loyal?  You also like to be the centre of attention and always appear attractive and beautiful.
