Starfish Charm Earrings – hand-made with Tibetan Silver Charms

The Starfish Charm Earrings bring this unusual sea creature to your jewellery collection. They have been hand-made by Sue using Tibetan silver charms and silver-plated ear hooks.

There are around 1600 different species of starfish around the world, but they are not actually fish at all. They are from the same family as sponges and sea urchins.

They have no brain, but a complex system of nerves. Neither do they have any blood. Instead, they use filtered sea water to pump nutrients through their nervous system.

They are long-lived and the average lifespan of a sea star is 35 years.

Most species of starfish have five arms, like the ones in these earrings, but some can have up to 50.

Starfish can only live in salt water; they will die if they find themselves in fresh water.  They occupy every type of habitat including tidal pools, rocky shores, sea grass, kelp beds and coral reefs. Some kinds of starfish are even found on sandy sea beds 9,000 metres deep.

They have eyes on the end of their arms, although they only allow them to sense light and dark, and help to find food. Their diet includes includes clams, oysters and snails. They themselves are also tasty morsels for  certain fish species, sharks, manta rays and even other starfish.

Their arms are covered with pincer-like organs and suckers. These allow the animal to slowly creep along the ocean floor.

These Starfish Charm Earrings

The Starfish Charm Earrings are part of Sue’s growing collection of marine-themed jewellery. The starfish charms are 1.9 cm across the arms and the earrings are 3.6 cm from the hooks.

They cost just £4.99 and include free postage and packaging to any UK address.
