Happy New Year 2018

Sue and Dave hope you had a most enjoyable Christmas and we wish you a very happy new year 2018. We haven’t been as busy in 2017 with craft fairs and events as we have in previous years and we are going to be quite selective about where we take Sue’s collections of hand-made and carefully selected jewellery in 2018. We will,of course, put all our events on our calendar page.

However, we are going to renew our commitment to this website by ensuring that we add new products and refresh some of the existing ones in our online shop.

You will find a lot of sales online and in the shops, however, we don’t just offer good prices for a limited time. Our prices stay low all year. Also, you get your  usual bonus of free second class postage to all UK addresses.

Here are a few ideas of ways to treat yourself to a Happy New Year 2018, or to treat someone else.

New Look To Our Home Page

We’ve added a great new look and a new way to get to some of the main areas of our website shop from our home page though this set of clickable pictures.

Swarovski Crystals in Birthstone ColoursDichroic Glass Category ImageSteampunk PendantsPurse Pads - Pretty Notepads for your purseGemstone Jewellery

This feature is known as a slider and shows some of the product ranges that you can find in our shop. It also provides a great new way of exploring these products by clicking on the pictures as they scroll round.  Each picture will take you to the right place in our shop to see and buy the range of products shown.

Why Use a Slider?

One clear advantage of using a slider is that website owners can place all their important content in a visually appealing and interactive slideshow at the top of the page before their main content. This allows users to quickly see the highlights and take action.

Sliders can run slideshows automatically without user input by moving slides on pre-defined time interval. Sliders can also respond to user interaction like click or swipe to view next or previous slides. Additionally, sliders can also have buttons or thumbnails which users can click to view a particular slide in the slider.

Hearts and Love

We’re trying to work out how the traditional heart shape relates to the organ inside the human body. Dave is also trying to work out how a muscle is associated with love – but he’s an old curmudgeon.

A little research, as well as experience has shown that we don’t ever feel physical sensations in your brain. Our bodies’ response to strong emotion generally occurs with a speeded up pulse, caused by stronger beating of the heart. So we are much more likely to perceive a concentrated sensation inside their chest (pounding heartbeat) when confronted with strong emotional stimuli.

St Valentine

As for St Valentine, he was a third-century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and has been associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love.

Very little is known about the martyr other than his name and the fact that he was buried at a cemetery north of Rome on February 14th. He was demoted from the Roman Catholic Church’s official list in 1969 but  the Catholic Church continues to recognize him as a saint, listing him as such in the February 14th entry in the Roman Martyrology

However, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Protestant Church, but the Eastern Orthodox Church, celebrates on July 6.

The 14th February became associated with love in the Middle Ages, especially through the writer Geoffrey Chaucer, but it was the 18th Century and the Victorians who really went to town and turned this date into the love-in that we see today. It evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines“).

Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Valentine’s Jewellery

LoveTaliesin Jewellery has a wide range of hearts and other love tokens. These are all hand-made by Sue using a variety of Swarovski Elements, Tibetan Silver Charms and Antique Bronze components. We also supply a range of romantic dichroic glass jewellery.

This weekend, from the 12 – 14th September, the streets of the old city are transformed by people wearing fantasy neo-Victorian costumes. From top hats and flying goggles, to corset and flamboyant feathers and you are welcome to join in the Victorian fantasy.

The Bazaar Eclectica in Castle Square is a Steampunk market, (free to enter) where you can the public, to the city and get into the clothing and accessories that make the scene so visually exciting, although you don’t have to dress up to be part of the fun.

What is Steampunk

You will find Steampunk Jewellery on LoveTaliesin Jewellery stalls and on this site, but what is it and where did it come from?  Here is a brief description and history.

Steampunk - 5 Steampunk - 4

Steampunk is essentially a variation of science fiction, fantasy and horror. The stories and scenarios are usually set in an alternative reality based on the use of steam power.  Much, but not all,  Steampunk is set in a Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history of Britain.  It has been described as “What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.

Steampunk - 3 Steampunk - 1

It embodies the Victorian’s optimism for the future, based on the Industrial Revolution and Empire, with somewhat purer ideals of creativity and self reliance. It creates a contrast with the commercialisation, mass production and waste in the real world and a offers nostalgia and appreciation for hand crafted quality and the beauty of the past.

Although the Steampunk movement has only existed since the late 1980s, its heroes and role models include HG Wells and Jules Verne, and some of fantastical machines and structures seen in the work of later writers, musicians, jewellery designers, film and TV programme makers are inspired by them.

Steampunk - 6 Steampunk - 2

Each Pendant, Brooch and piece of LoveTaliesin Steampunk Jewellery is hand-made by Sue using recycled watch parts and Antique Bronze charms.
